You’ve probably eaten pancakes thicker than this. The W880i is a stunning departure from Sony Ericsson’s usual chunky little phones.

Looking slimmer than its 9.4mm thickness, this sleek 3G phone gets high points on the design front. Encased in brushed stainless steel at the front and smooth rubber at the back and weighing not much more than a Mars bar, the W880i got more oohs and aahs than we’ve had for a phone in a long time. It feels great to hold and, despite its thinness, seems to be strong enough not to crack in your pocket.

There’s a stunning screen, a superb 2-megapixel camera on the back (plus a secondary camera on the front for video calling) and a 1GB card comes with the phone, ideal for storing stacks of images, video footage and, of course, music. Battery power is also impressive: depending on the number of calls made and received, we were able to get three to five days’ use before completely draining the battery.

On the downside, the keypad buttons on the phone are awful. They are extremely thin, like raised eyelashes, and so closely spaced together vertically that you’ll need to use fingernails to strike accurately.

In a double whammy, the corresponding letters above the keys are reflective, so typing an SMS outdoors is challenging - you’ll need to keep tilting the phone so you can make out the letters.

The other navigation keys sitting right under the 4.6cm screen were more thoughtfully considered, with plenty of room to operate them easily. If you’ve never used a Sony Ericsson phone before, though, you should know they don’t have green and red call and end-call buttons. This takes some time to adjust to.

All up, a very sexy phone, though with an ill-conceived keypad.
